Steinway only manufactured the 6-foot 2-inch model A in Germany for most of the 20th century. However, very recently they started manufacturing them again in New York.
For a brief period of time Steinway made a much sought after Stretch A 6-foot 4-inch grand piano which adds string length and soundboard area. These pianos are treasured for their extraordinary, rich tone.
Even more remarkable is the condition of this piano. It has obviously benefited from a gentle climate (and was a Southern California piano). More than that, it has hardly been played. The strings have no rust and practically no tarnishing, and the condition of the felt belies its years. In fact, the only substantial work done to this piano is a refinishing some years ago and a new set of Mapes bass strings (the same type Steinway installs on their pianos) which were just installed. The extensive concert level regulation, voicing, string termination, myriad adjustments, lubrication and other refinements have revealed a truly great piano.
The action has an even, medium weight and is very responsive. The soundboard is immaculate. But it is the tone of this instrument that sets it apart – round, yet projecting. From the lowest notes to the top register, a singing, warm sound envelopes the player and listener alike.
Many people refer to this era of Steinway as the Golden Era of production. When encountering an instrument like this, you can experience a classic Steinway scale design at its best.
