This is a very special piano. First, it was one of the first model L Baldwin Artist Series pianos produced with the design enhancements including the Acu-Just Hitch pins and other technologies employed by Baldwin in conjunction with Bechstein which Baldwin owned at the time.
It is great to know the history of a piano. But unlike cars and houses which come with a paper trail, piano sales are not documented. In this case I am intimately familiar with this piano because it was my father Morton Estrin’s piano! (He still has his 1972 Baldwin 7-foot grand, so he’s in good shape!)
Incidentally, 1972 appears to have been a stellar year for Baldwin production. Not only are my father’s 2 Baldwins from that year, but my Baldwin concert grand was also manufactured in 1972, another spectacular instrument!
This piano was originally owned by composer Meyer Kupferman who wrote many works for my father which he performed and recorded.
As you would expect from a piano owned by a concert pianist, it had tremendous use. We have rebuilt this piano to the highest possible standard. The piano was restrung with Mapes International Gold Series piano wire and German tuning pins. The soundboard was refinished, the plate has been re-gilded and the case has been detailed. The piano also has the following new parts:
- Key tops
- Key bushings
- Front rail bushings
- Renner shanks
- Renner flanges
- Renner knuckles
- German Abel hammers
- Agraffes
The piano has been restored to its former glory! It represents the pinnacle of American piano design in a meticulously restored piano equal or better than any piano of its size you are likely to encounter.
