This 2005 Kawai GM-10K in polished ebony is a mint-condition baby grand that proves you don’t need a massive piano to make a serious musical statement. At five-feet, it fits beautifully in real-world rooms—yet it has a surprisingly warm, singing tone and a refined touch that make it equally at home in a studio, teaching environment, or performance setting.
A real concert story that says it all
This very piano was used in a concert performance of Saint-Saëns’ Carnival of the Animals in a two-piano setting of my sister and her duo partner—paired with a Hamburg Steinway Model D (9’ concert grand). The reason? There simply wasn’t room onstage for another full-size concert grand. With the pianos positioned so the Steinway’s lid opened toward the orchestra, the balance worked exceptionally well—and the GM-10K’s naturally warm, blended sound complemented the concert grand beautifully instead of fighting it.
Why the GM-10K is such a smart “forever” baby grand
The GM-10 was known for years as one of Kawai’s most popular baby grands. This GM-10K carries the design goal that made the model famous: big musical satisfaction in a compact footprint.
Notable design and musical features (from Kawai)
- 5’0″ (150 cm) grand — ideal size for homes and studios
- Premium spruce soundboard for resonance and tonal color
- Ultra Responsive action with ABS action parts for consistent touch and stability
- All underfelted hammers for a warm, refined tone
- Shigeru Kawai concert agraffes (keys 1–54)—a premium detail you don’t always see in this class
- True sostenuto pedal and two lid prop positions
The takeaway
If you want a piano that looks elegant, plays with a responsive professional feel, and produces a tone that blends beautifully—even alongside a major concert grand—this GM-10K is a rare find in this condition.
