This Baldwin Model M represents a spectacular era of American piano manufacturing. Hand-built in Cincinnati during the “Golden Age” of the Baldwin Artist Series, this 5’2” baby grand was designed to offer the rich, complex tonal profile of a much larger instrument. For many purists, a mid-century Baldwin is the only true American alternative to a Steinway, and this freshly rebuilt example shows exactly why.

A Conservatory-Level Legacy
The Model M holds a very special place in my heart. In fact, after I graduated from conservatory, my own personal piano was a Baldwin M. I chose it because, as a pianist, I needed an instrument that didn’t compromise on touch or tonal depth, even though I was working with a limited space at the time. This model has always been the “insider’s choice” for serious musicians who need a world-class grand that fits comfortably in a home or studio.

Legendary Scale Design
What makes the Model M truly unique is its extraordinary scale design. While most baby grands under 5’5″ can sound thin or “tubby” in the low end, the Baldwin M is famous for having a bigger bass and a much richer overall sound than almost any other piano in its size class. Baldwin’s engineers managed to create a string length and soundboard tension that allow this 5’2” instrument to growl and sing with the authority of a much larger parlor grand.

A Masterful Aesthetic Restoration
The exterior of this instrument has been treated to a traditional sprayed lacquer finish, meticulously hand-rubbed to a classic Ebony Satin. Inside, the transformation continues with a re-gilded plate and a refinished soundboard. One of the most remarkable features of this specific piano is the preservation of its original ivory keys, which have been expertly polished to provide a tactile experience and “grip” that modern plastic simply cannot replicate.

Comprehensive Mechanical Rebuilding
This wasn’t just a cosmetic refresh; the heart of the piano has been completely overhauled:
New Strings & Pins: Restrung using premium Mapes strings (the historic choice for Baldwin and Steinway) with new tuning pins for rock-solid stability.
•Action Overhaul: The action features polished screw whippens and shanks, refinished action brackets, and a back action that has been thoroughly cleaned and adjusted. There is also a new set of damper felts for clean tone termination.
•Precision Regulation: The hammers have been expertly reshaped and followed by a full action regulation, resulting in a touch that is responsive, fast, and capable of the most delicate nuances.

Finding a hand-built American Artist Series Baldwin in this condition for under $16,000 is an exceptional opportunity. This is an instrument for the serious player who wants the character and soul of a vintage American legend with the reliability and “immaculate” feel of a brand-new piano.
