A Shared Legacy: The Grotrian and Steinway Connection
The history of Grotrian-Steinweg is inextricably linked to the birth of the modern piano. In the mid-1800s, Friedrich Grotrian joined forces with Theodor Steinweg (son of Heinrich Steinweg) to manufacture instruments of unparalleled quality. While Heinrich eventually moved to New York to become “Henry Steinway,” the Grotrian family continued the tradition of excellence in Germany. Today, both names represent the pinnacle of piano manufacturing, with Grotrian-Steinweg remaining one of the few truly world-class German-made instruments.
Masterful Craftsmanship and Breathtaking Aesthetics
This 6′ 7″ Model 200 is an extraordinary example of European cabinet making. Finished in a gorgeous Rosewood Polish, the natural wood grain is nothing short of breathtaking. The case features intricate hand-carvings that are widely considered a “lost art” in today’s manufacturing world. To complete the tactile experience, the piano is equipped with rare, one-piece ivory keytops in immaculate condition.
Comprehensive Restoration: Restrung and Refinished
While this instrument arrived in exceptional original condition, we have performed a high-level restoration to ensure its mechanical longevity and tonal brilliance:
Restrung with Mapes Strings: The piano has been completely restrung using premium Mapes strings, the same gold standard used by the world’s finest manufacturers.
New Tuning Pins: We have installed new tuning pins to provide rock-solid tuning stability for decades to come.
Refinished Soundboard: The soundboard has been meticulously refinished. It retains an excellent crown with a solid connection to all the ribs, preserving the “heart and soul” that gives this instrument its legendary resonance.
A Tonal Masterpiece with World-Class Action
The sound of this Grotrian-Steinweg is remarkably pure and warm. Thanks to one of the world’s greatest piano scale designs, there is a richness and evenness of tone across every register. The all-original German action provides a world-class level of performance and shows extremely minor wear, offering a responsive, nuanced touch that will satisfy the most discerning professional.
A Rare Piece of Piano History
This 1971 model represents a unique era for the company. Following a famous legal battle in the early 1970s, Steinway won a suit that required Grotrian-Steinweg to drop the “Steinweg” name for the U.S. market. While instruments sold in the States today are branded simply as “Grotrian,” Grotrian piano in Europe still carry the original, historic Grotrian-Steinweg name—a badge of honor for connoisseurs who appreciate the finest pianos available at any price.
