Steinway & Sons Model 1098 Studio Upright

This is the legendary “Workhorse” of the music world.

Welcome to LivingPianos.com. We are pleased to present a classic American instrument: a 1973 Steinway Model 1098 Studio Upright. If you have ever walked through the practice corridors of Juilliard, Curtis, or almost any major music conservatory in the last 50 years, you have heard this piano. The Model 1098 is arguably the most widely used professional upright piano in history.

Why is the Model 1098 so famous?

It was designed specifically to endure the rigors of institutional use while providing a musical experience that satisfies serious pianists. Because it is a true “Studio” size (46 ½ inches), it accommodates a full-size Steinway Accelerated Action. This means the touch is responsive and speedy—far superior to the compressed actions found in smaller console pianos.

Condition and Tone

This particular instrument, from 1973, has just been refinished in a classic Satin Black. It possesses the signature Steinway American sound: a rich, growling bass and a singing treble that projects surprisingly well for an upright.

It is rare to find these in such clean condition. Because they are often used in schools, many used 1098s are “played to death.” However, this instrument has been well-maintained and offers the stability and dynamic range you expect from a Steinway.

The Value Proposition

Before Steinway discontinued the production of this model, the list price had climbed to over $25,000. Today, the only comparable new Steinway upright (the K-52) costs upwards of $70,000.

Finding a genuine Steinway upright in excellent playing condition for under $10,000 is an exceptional opportunity. This is the perfect piano for a serious student, a teacher, or a piano lover with limited space who refuses to compromise on touch and tone.
