Steinway & Sons Grand Piano

The Steinway model A3 which is nicknamed the “Stretch A”, was only manufactured in New York from 1913 through WWII. Many people regard this as the ultimate Steinway scale design. At between 2 ½ to 4 ½ inches longer than other Steinway model A pianos (including those made today), people describe the sound of this piano as a 7-foot piano in a 6-foot 4-inch case.

This instrument has been masterfully rebuilt in New York in the early 2000’s with new Steinway action, new strings, pinblock, soundboard, tuning pins, damper felts as well as refinished case. It has had very moderate play since its restoration. So it is in excellent condition.

As great as Steinway pianos can be, the transition from register to register is not always as smooth as you find on some other world-class pianos. The A3 has the benefit of evenness of sound throughout all registers with no weak spots. While great piano technicians can minimize the disruption of tonal changes throughout different sections of the keyboard, a great A3 like this one comes closer to a perfect Steinway sound throughout the full range of the piano.
