The Baldwin SF-10 is regarded as one of the greatest 7-foot pianos ever produced in the United States along with Steinway B and Mason & Hamlin BB. Designed jointly by Baldwin and Bechstein (Baldwin owned Bechstein at the time) it has a huge bass and singing treble. The full German made Renner action (like found in Hamburg Steinway and Bosendorfer) provides the ultimate playing experience.
This piano has 2 distinctions which set it apart from other Baldwin SF-10’s. First, it was produced in the most stelar period of Baldwin’s history well before the slow decline and eventual bankruptcy of Baldwin in the early 2000’s. It also has been played very little so there is minimal wear. In fact, other than the refinement process, the biggest part of restoring this piano was cleaning inside and out. Then full regulation, voicing, string leveling, action lubrication, string termination, damper regulation, pedal adjustments and fine tuning put the piano in a concert level of performance.
If you have never played a great Baldwin SF-10, it is a unique instrument. It has a clarity and focus of the great European pianos combined with the fat, warm tone of the great American pianos. They are not only terrific performance instruments, but they also record exceptionally well.
Like all pianos, there are some that have more singing, sustained tone which are capable of producing the most singing musical lines. This is absolutely the top echelon of 7-foot pianos and it has one of the most singing tones of any piano you are likely to encounter.
