It is great finding a fairly late model Steinway that doesn’t require complete rebuilding to play on a high level. While some people seek out the older Steinways because of the generally higher quality of manufacturing, every now and then you come across a late model Steinway that is a gem in great condition. This piano has been incredibly well maintained and also looks gorgeous.

When playing instruments from this era, I always check for any action noise since this can sometimes be an issue with pianos from this period. The action is very quiet and responsive. More than that, the tone is warm and round with good sustain in the treble – a sign of a great piano.

One benefit of having a piano that didn’t require extensive work is that the instrument is extremely stable. (New pianos and newly rebuilt pianos have a break in period which requires more maintenance before stabilizing.) So, you can enjoy a high level of performance on an instrument that has had a very gentle life and should provide a high level of performance for years to come with regular maintenance.
